Massage is great for all dogs and cats - from puppies and kittens to geriatric dogs and cats and all ages in between. Dog and Cat massage offers physical and mental benefits. Just like you, your pet’s behavior and emotional state are directly influenced by how they feel physically.
The benefits of massage include:
- Shinier coat and healthier skin
- Improved levels of performance at events such as herding, agility, or obedience training
- Stimulation of circulation and release of endorphins
- Improved joint flexibility and range of motion
- Reduction of inflammation and swelling (and pain) in joints
- Assists in recovery and rehabilitation after surgery or illness
- Mitigate age-related issues such as arthritis
- Helps calm anxious animals
- General physical and psychological well-being
Massage techniques used on animals are the same as those used on people, but with a lighter touch. Since animals cannot give the same feedback that people can, close attention must be paid to the animal’s clues and behaviors, which provide valuable information as to what areas of the body may need special attention.
Please note that Animal Massage is not a substitute for veterinary care and does not treat or diagnose illness or injury.
There are some situations when massage is contraindicated, such as when the animal is actively ill. And, of course, massage is always contraindicated when the veterinarian or the animal says so.
